Some services use a calibration called &#8216;NHANES&#8217;. The NHANES calculation does a normal DEXA Scan but then will reduce the Lean mass by 5.6% and will add this value to the fat mass.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This calibration has been shown to give innacurate results and the scientific consensus as well as the manufacturer recommendation is that all DEXA Scanners should not use this calibration<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243;]<\/p>\n<h2>So who is using this outdated method?<\/h2>\n<p>Sadly some services have not followed the current scientific consensus and have continued to use NHANES. Scans from the US and Europe should be carefully scrutinised. In the UK, Bodyscan UK Ltd, which is based in Bank and Marylebone in London did, until Q1 2025, use the NHANES calculation, so the pdf reports issued before this time may contain this data. Additionally, some of the private medical establishments in London which aren&#8217;t as accustomed to doing body composition scans also may use this.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.24.2&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2>What should I do about my NHANES Scan?<\/h2>\n<p>Well, first use the calculator and understand that your real body fat percentage is not as high as the services above would have you believe. Personally then we would recommend finding and using a service that doesn&#8217;t use NHANES.
