What is a DEXA scan?
A DEXA scan is a type of body scan that uses low-dose X-rays to measure your body composition and bone density. The DEXA scan takes approximately 4 minutes to complete and is a safe and non-invasive procedure.Â

What can a DEXA scan tell me?
A Harley Street DEXA scan provides a gold-standard analysis of body composition and bone density. You will receive a detailed DEXA report outlining your body fat percentage and distribution, visceral fat level, lean mass percentage and distribution (including any muscular imbalances), android: gynoid ratio, and your resting metabolic rate (RMR).
DEXA scan results offer a good indication of your overall health. Body composition is a key predictor of longevity, providing greater insight than your weight or BMI alone. After your scan, we will walk you through each part of your report in your 1:1 consultation, and you’ll leave with an action plan in place.
How much does a DEXA scan cost?
A DEXA scan at My Vital Metrics London Harley Street costs ÂŁ189. This includes a ÂŁ20 referral fee for first-time clients.Â

Does a DEXA scan use radiation?
Yes, a DEXA scan uses low-dose X-ray beams. The amount of radiation from a DEXA scan is very low, approximately equivalent to that of a 1-hour flight. A DEXA scan is incredibly safe, and we will enquire about any recent X-rays you may have received during our self-referral process.

Do I need an appointment?
Yes, you will need an appointment to visit us at My Vital Metrics. You can book an appointment via our booking page or by giving us a call on 0808 501 4040.
Do I need a referral?
Our DEXA scan requires a referral. This is to ensure that the scan is safe for you.Â
When you book your DEXA scan, we will check whether you have had a referral with us before. If this is your first visit or you need a new referral, you will be prompted to complete a brief medical questionnaire. Our registered dietician will then review your information and, in most cases, grant your DEXA referral. Where a DEXA scan isn’t recommended, we will suggest an alternative body composition service here at My Vital Metrics.Â
DEXA referrals are valid for 1 year, so if you return for a follow-up scan within 12 months, you won’t need to repeat the referral process.Â
None of our other tests, scans, and services require a referral — simply book an appointment to get started.Â
